LATEST BALLAST WATER MANAGEMENT APPROVALS AT IMO

The afternoon session on the opening day of MEPC 64 had ballast water on the agenda.

There was still frustration that the convention was not ratified as 35 contracting states have signed, representing 28% of the world fleet, leaving the BWM Convention still below the 35% of world merchant fleet required to bring the convention in to force.

However, business progressed and eight BWM systems were approved - 3 final and 5 basic, with one refusal (on the grounds of being insufficiently developed). These were as follows:

• JFE Ballast Ace - Japan - 64/2/7
• Smart BWMS - Korea - 64/2/7
• DESMI Ocean Guard - Netherlands - 64/2/6

Basic Approval:
• Ocean Doctor BWMS - Korea - 64/2/7
• KTM BWMS - Korea - 64/2/6
• Hamworthy Acquarius - Netherlands 64/2/6
• HS Ballast BWMS - Korea - 64/2/19
• Glo En Saver BWMS - Korea 6

• Dow Pinnacle - BWMS - Singapore - 64/2/19
